Depression
Many of my patients struggle with symptoms of depression such as loneliness, despair, isolation and shame. They come to me with a sense of hopelessness, lack of motivation or feeling stuck. The reasons for these challenges could be a chemical imbalance or situational life stressors that have been exacerbated by the global pandemic. After many years of doing intake assessments, I am able to determine whether the depression can be treated using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and other coping skills strategies or whether psychiatric referral is necessary. Some patients are using other chemicals or behaviors to self-medicate their depression and others have unresolved trauma that I can help them uncover using a psychodynamic and trauma-based therapy.
Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common underlying mental health issues that I treat in my practice. I am often able to help my patients cope with fear using mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy. Creating a safe warm space to process their fears and validating their feelings is key to my practice. I will often employ breathing techniques or meditation during the session to help my patients relax and lower symptoms of anxiety. I have extensive experience using dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT) as a coping skill to handle stress and regulate emotions. When necessary, we can also explore the use of medication through my wide network of psychiatric referrals.
Addiction
I have had the honor and privilege of working for over a decade at a premier outpatient substance abuse treatment center in Manhattan as a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor. I was able to gain valuable experience treating addictive disorders by facilitating intensive outpatient, relapse prevention and early recovery groups during my tenure working in the field. I am able to meet patients where they are on the spectrum of willingness to change regardless of whether they are contemplative / ambivalent or ready for action and maintenance. I am equally comfortable using an abstinence model or a harms reduction model depending on the needs of my patients on a case-by-case basis. My goal is to destigmatize addiction and to give my patients the tools and support to address their problem.
